Hello!! Today I’m sharing a super easy, beginner friendly coaster pattern. In no time, you can learn how to make these new Beginner HDC Coasters. Coasters are one of my favorite things to crochet because they’re useful, usually whip up quickly and are perfect for gifting.

Inspiration
Created especially for teaching my beginner crochet classes, the Beginner HDC Coaster crochet pattern is the perfect easy project for learning how to crochet. Of course, the coaster design was inspired by the need to offer a fun yet simple pattern to beginner students, but it’s also such a great way to pass on new hooking skills.
If you need more coaster inspiration and want to try your hand at some new stitches then be sure to check out a few of my other patterns shown below.
Design Details
The coaster can be made with any brand of cotton yarn as long as it’s #4 worsted weight and a 5.00 mm (H) hook. You only need around 22 yards to make one coaster, and you can whip one up in about 30 minutes or less.
Like many of my other patterns I also include options to personalize the coasters to your own taste. You can use a solid color yarn or a fun variegated yarn, add fringe or even beads.
The coasters are worked in rows using the simple half double crochet stitch. Then the border is made using single crochet stitches. The coasters look really nice once you finish the border but can easily be “dressed up” by adding fringe and/or beads.
This crochet pattern is really easy to customize with the endless color options that are available in worsted weight cotton yarn. The coaster shown above is made with I Love This Cotton in Serene Spa. I also used I Love This Cotton in Emerald Pine which is shown in the photo at the beginning of the article.
Several of the yarns that I’ve used can be found on Amazon and if you want to check them out over there just click the photos below. **As an Amazon Associate I may earn from qualifying purchases.

Add fringe and beads: Cut four 6″ long strands of yarn to attach one strand to each corner. Fold 1 strand in half, hold the coaster with back facing you and insert hook into middle sc of the 3 in each corner, pull strand half way through. Insert both tails of the strand through the loop, pull tightly to secure. Thread both tails through bead and tie a knot to hold the bead on. Trim tails so they are about 1″ long. Unravel the fringe by “combing” your needle through the strands.
