Hot pads are one of my favorite things to design, but if you’ve followed SASS Crochet for very long at all, then you already know that. I just love working with cotton yarn and crocheting anything that works up quickly and is useful.

Inspiration

My idea for the Christmas Tree Hot Pad pattern was actually designed late last year; I just ran out of time to release it before the holidays. So, I tucked it away and when Marie over at Underground Crafter invited me to participate in the 7th Annual Christmas In July Make Along I knew that this would be the perfect project for this amazing event.

Gifting season may seem far away right now, but we all get so busy that time of year so it’s the perfect time to get started now! Each week of the make along has its own gifting theme:

Week 1 (July 1-7): Gifts for Babies, Kids, and Teens
Week 2 (July 8-14): Gifts for Women
Week 3 (July 15-21): Gifts for Anyone
Week 4 (July 22-28): Gifts for Home
Week 5 (July 29-31): Gifts for Pets

For this festive celebration, I chose to design a project that is perfect for the “Gifts for Home” week. The Christmas Tree Hot Pad fits that theme perfectly!

NOTE: This hot pad pattern is intended to protect countertops and tables. It is not meant to pick up hot pots/pans.

Design Details

I used I Love This Cotton yarn that I had on hand to design this pattern. It’s a soft, worsted weight yarn that works up great when working the Popcorn stitch. You only need a 4.00 mm hook and a little over 135 yards of yarn to make this festive extra thick hot pad.

You will make the front panel with the tree on it and then a back panel using only the single crochet stitch. The two panels are then connected with an extra thick Puff Edge stitch border. They measure 9″ tall x 8.5″ wide making them the perfect size for most pans.

This is an intermediate level pattern due to the Popcorn stitch and color changes. With some practice, I do feel like an advanced beginner could easily tackle this project. Even though it’s pretty easy to work up, the premium PDF offers a photo tutorial for working the border if you get stuck.

As with all of my hot pad designs, I do recommend that you use cotton yarn only as acrylic will likely melt when placing a hot pan on it. Remember, these hot pads are not meant to replace oven mitts and are not intended to pick up or remove hot items from an oven. They are solely designed to provide an additional layer of protection for your countertops.

Yarn Info!

The hot pad shown above is made with 3 different colors of I Love This Cotton yarn: white, sage, and brown. I also used I Love This Cotton in the dove color which is shown in photos throughout the article.

Several of these yarns can be found on Amazon and if you want to check them out over there just click the photos below. **As an Amazon Associate I may earn from qualifying purchases.

I love how easily customizable these hot pads are with the unlimited colors that are available in worsted weight cotton yarn. Look at these amazing hot pads from my very talented testers, Stacy, Michele, Peg and Ethy! They all used many different brands of worsted weight cotton yarn ranging from Peaches & Cream along with Sugar ‘n Cream as well as We Crochet Dishie. They all worked up beautifully I think!

Christmas Tree Hot Pad Crochet Pattern

What you will need for the Christmas Tree Hot Pad crochet pattern

  1. Worsted weight (#4) cotton yarn
  2. 135 yds: MC (Front panel) – 55 yds, Green (Tree, Border & Back panel) – 77 yds, Brown (Stump)- 3 yds
  3. 4.00 mm (G) hook
  4. Yarn needle
  5. Scissors

Pattern Notes

* Intermediate pattern.

** Written in US crochet terms.

* Finished size: 8.5″ wide x 9″ tall.

** Gauge: 7.5 sc x 8.25 rows = 2″.

* Chain stitch at the beginning of Rnd does not count as a stitch. Always place 1st stitch of each row in same stitch as beginning chain unless stated otherwise.

** When changing colors, I do not fasten off the MC. I drop the MC and join the next color. I clip the tree and trunk colors after completing that row.

* I used a combination of tapestry & intarsia crochet techniques. Be sure to leave some slack in the carried yarn and always carry the yarn on the WS.

** To change colors do not complete sc. Leave 2 loops on hook, yarn over with new color and pull through 2 loops on hook.

* Each hot pad is made up of 2 pieces, a front and back that is connected with a Puff Edge Stitch border.

** Stitch count is only listed on each row when there is a change.

* Starting at the bottom right corner, odd numbered rows are read ⬅️ and are RS rows. Even numbered rows are read ➡️ and are WS rows.
