Free crochet pattern: Bumblebee Market Bag – collage showing a black and yellow striped crochet market bag with scalloped handles

Hello, crochet friends! 🐝💛

If you love crochet projects that are both cute and practical, the Bumblebee Market Bag is a fun one to add to your handmade collection. With its bold black and yellow stripes inspired by a busy little bumblebee, this bag is sure to bring a cheerful pop of color wherever you take it.

I’ve always loved making market bags because they’re one of those projects that you’ll actually use again and again. Whether you’re heading to the farmer’s market, running a quick trip to the store, or just need a handy bag for everyday errands, a sturdy crochet bag always comes in handy.

Bumblebee Market Bag crochet pattern – black and yellow striped crochet market bag with scalloped handles

The Bumblebee Market Bag is worked in the round from the bottom up using simple stitches, making it a great advanced beginner crochet pattern that’s relaxing to make and easy to customize.

One of my favorite little details is the optional crochet wings. You can keep the bag simple with classic stripes, or add the wings for a playful touch that really brings the bumblebee theme to life.

Whether you’re crocheting this bag for yourself, gifting it to a friend, or filling it with fresh market finds, it’s a project that’s as useful as it is fun to make.

You can find the free version of the Bumblebee Market Bag crochet pattern below, including the materials list, notes on color changes, and instructions for making the optional wings.

Inspiration Behind the Bumblebee Market Bag

This cheerful little bumblebee bag is a design that had been buzzing around in my mind for quite some time. I knew I wanted to create a bee-inspired crochet bag, but for the longest while I just couldn’t quite get the design from paper to yarn in a way that felt right.

Sometimes crochet patterns come together quickly, and sometimes they take a little patience.

While I was working on my Bumblebee Stemless Wine Glass Cozy, the idea for this bag suddenly clicked. Once I started stitching it up, everything finally fell into place — the bold black and yellow stripes, the shape of the bag, and even the optional little wings that give it that fun bumblebee personality.

The moment I finished the first one, I knew it was a design I had to share.

And if you enjoy crocheting market bags as much as I do, you might also love my Sunflower Market Bag, which you can find here on the blog as another free crochet pattern.

Design Details

The Bumblebee Market Bag is designed to be both fun and functional. The bag is worked in the round from the bottom up, creating a sturdy base that easily expands to hold all your market finds, yarn purchases, or everyday essentials. Bumblebee Market Bag C

The bold black and yellow stripes give the bag its cheerful bumblebee look, while the textured rows add structure and durability so the bag keeps its shape even when filled.

This pattern is written for advanced beginners and uses familiar stitches like double crochet, half double crochet, and easy post stitches to create the striped texture. Once you get into the rhythm of the pattern, it’s a relaxing project that works up quickly.

The bag is crocheted using medium weight cotton yarn, which makes it sturdy, washable, and perfect for reusable shopping bags. Cotton also helps the bag hold its shape while still allowing it to stretch just enough for carrying produce, books, or other daily essentials.

For an extra bit of personality, the pattern also includes instructions for optional crochet wings that can be attached to the bag for a playful bumblebee-inspired finish.

Whether you keep it simple with classic stripes or add the wings for a whimsical touch, this market bag is designed to be a practical project you’ll reach for again and again.

• 5.00 mm (H) crochet hook

Please read through these notes before beginning the pattern to help ensure a smooth crocheting experience.

• This pattern is written in US crochet terminology.
