Inspiration

When it comes to pumpkins I don’t need much to inspire a new design! I absolutely love working up new pumpkin patterns and I have to admit that I have several more in my notebook just waiting for me to bring them to life.

Unfortunately, I just don’t have enough time to get all of them written, tested and released in one season!

White & striped Spicewood Pumpkins

This beautiful new Spicewood Pumpkin is the perfect pattern to use when making pumpkins for your markets or for gifting.

Design Details

Gray Spicewood Pumpkin
Made with #6 Yarn Bee, TRUE COLORS yarn in Gray

The Spicewood Pumpkin is designed using #5 bulky weight yarn so you can whip several of these up in no time. Don’t have any bulky yarn? Well, you’re in luck. They also work up really well when you make them by holding 2 strands of #4 worsted weight yarn together too.

The pumpkins are worked in the round using single crochet and the half double crochet 3rd loop only stitch. This is what gives the pumpkin the beautiful texture.

I also designed a long stem that has a natural twist and a slight ruffled effect around the base.

You ready to get started? Just scroll down and check out the FREE version of the pattern below. You can also grab the premium, ad-free version of the Spicewood Pumpkin for a small cost in either of my shops.

The paid PDF includes the written instructions and 3 photo tutorials: one showing how to work the HDC in the 3rd loop, another for cinching the ends closed and also one showing you how to make the stems.

Pattern Notes

  • Advanced beginner pattern
  • Written in US crochet terms
  • The pumpkin is worked in the round.
  • The stems are worked in rows and then the base is finished by working in the round.
  • Finished size: 19″ around (diameter) x 4.5″ tall (from top to bottom of pumpkin excluding stem)
  • Gauge: Not essential for this pattern.
  • Ch st at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch.
  • Stitch count is only listed on each round when there is a change.
  • When working the hdc3l you will be working into the 3rd loop in the back.
  • When working the single crochet rounds you will see “join” and that means to use the invisible join method on those rounds. You will not join the other rounds unless otherwise stated in the pattern instructions.
  • Invisible Join Tutorial – https://simplymelaniejane.com/invisible-join-crochet-tutorial/
  • When working the sc rounds make sure your tension isn’t too tight. It will be difficult to work the hdc3l rounds if so.

CLOSING PUMPKIN ENDS

Using the long tail from Rnd 1 (the bottom of the pumpkin), thread your needle and make a running stitch through the outermost row of stitches on the bottom. Pull the yarn tightly to gather the end together then tie a knot to secure the closure. Stuff pumpkin with Poly-fil. Using the long tail from Rnd 17, close the other end the same way as the bottom end.

Adding a Stem:

Decorate the top however you like. For the Spicewood Pumpkins, I use the crochet stem below. It’s also fun to attach real stems with hot glue and then tie on a bow using ribbon or raffia. Other fun options would be wine corks or cinnamon sticks!!
