The Link Stitch ended up being the perfect choice for this design. Its raised texture creates natural-looking sections around the pumpkin and gives such a pretty, slightly rustic finish without needing a complicated stitch pattern.
Over the years, this little pumpkin has remained one of those fun fall projects that is easy to make your own. Change up the colors, use a different style of stem, or make several and group them together for a cozy handmade pumpkin patch.

Before You Start

Pumpkin Instructions
Using a 3.75 mm crochet hook, ch 19.
Row 1:
sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 3, turn. (18 sc)
Row 2:
Begin first link stitch in 2nd ch from hook, continue down into the 3rd ch and into the 1st sc from the previous row. Work a link stitch in each stitch across, ch 1, turn. (18 link stitches)
Link Stitch
The Mini Country Pumpkin uses the shorter Link Stitch variation. For the first stitch, begin with ch 3 and work until you have 4 loops on the hook. Each Link Stitch after that is worked into the two horizontal bars of the previous Link Stitch and the next stitch of the previous row.
First Link Stitch
- Ch 3. Insert hook into the 2nd ch from hook and pull up a loop.
- Insert hook into the 3rd ch from hook and pull up a loop.
- Insert hook into the first st of the previous row and pull up a loop. (4 loops on hook)
- YO and pull through the first 2 loops.
- YO and pull through the next 2 loops.
- YO and pull through the last 2 loops.

Next Link Stitch
- Insert hook under the first horizontal bar of the previous Link Stitch and pull up a loop. (2 loops on hook)
- Insert hook under the second horizontal bar and pull up a loop. (3 loops on hook)
- Insert hook into the next st of the previous row and pull up a loop. (4 loops on hook)
- YO and pull through 2 loops three times until 1 loop remains on the hook.
Repeat the Next Link Stitch steps across the row.
Rows 3 – 4:
sc in next 3 st, hdc in next 12 st, sc in next 3 st, ch 1, turn. (18 sc)
Row 5:
sc next 3 st, hdc next 12 st, sc next 3 st, ch 3, turn.
Rows 6 – 13:
rep Rows 2 – 5 (2 times).
Row 14:
rep Row 2.
Rows 15 – 16:
rep Rows 3 – 4.
DO NOT finish off.
Finishing the Pumpkin
Bring the edges together with Row 1 behind Row 16, with the WS facing out.
Working through both layers, sl st evenly across the edges to seam them together.
Finish off, leaving a long tail — approximately 4 ft. — for closing the ends and shaping the pumpkin.
Thread the long yarn tail onto a yarn needle. Working around one open end, make a running stitch through the outermost row of stitches. Pull firmly to gather the opening closed and secure with a knot.
Turn the pumpkin RS out.
Do not cut the yarn.
Bring the yarn tail through the center of the pumpkin to the opposite opening.
Stuff firmly with Poly-Fil, shaping the pumpkin as you go.
Using the same running-stitch method, gather the second opening closed and secure.
Shape the Pumpkin
Using the yarn tail, create the pumpkin indentations by wrapping the yarn evenly around the outside of the pumpkin between the Link Stitch sections.
Insert the needle through the center of the pumpkin and pull firmly to create the indentation.
Continue wrapping the yarn between each Link Stitch section and passing the needle back through the center until all sections are shaped.

Adding A Stem
Decorate the top however you like. For the Mini Crochet Country Pumpkins, I use the instructions for the crochet stem shown below. It’s also fun to attach real stems and then tie on a bow or raffia. Other fun options would be wine corks or cinnamon sticks!!

Using a 3.50 mm crochet hook, ch 7.
Row 1:
sc in 2nd ch from hook and next 2 ch, hdc next 2 ch, dc last ch, ch 1, turn. (6 st)
Row 2:
slst across, ch 1, turn.
Row 3:
FLO, sc next 3 st, hdc next 2 st, dc in last st, ch 1, turn.
Row 4:
rep Row 2.
Row 5:
rep Row 3.
Row 6:
sc across, ch 1, turn.
Seam the Stem
Bring the edges together with Row 1 behind Row 6.
Working through the beginning chs of Row 1 and both loops of Row 6, sl st the edges together, ch 1.
Finish the Stem Base
Rnd 1: Sc evenly around the bottom edge, placing 2 sc in Row 1 and Row 6 and 3 sc in each of Rows 2–5. Join with sl st to first sc, ch 1. (16 sc)
Rnd 2: *Sc in next st, picot, sl st in next st; rep from * around. (8 picots)
Finish off, leaving a long tail — approximately 24″ — for attaching the stem.
Sew the stem securely to the top of the pumpkin.
Picot Stitch
Ch 3 from the top of the sc.
Insert hook into the 3rd ch from hook — the first ch made — yo and pull through the ch and the loop on your hook.
