Stitched in Love Nursing Blanket Crochet Pattern (With Peekaboo Opening)

Some crochet projects are stitched with more than just yarn — they’re made with love, quiet moments, and a whole lot of heart. The Stitched in Love Nursing Blanket was created during a season of sweet anticipation as I waited on my new grandbaby, who arrived on December 31. It’s soft, cozy, and thoughtfully functional — designed for those tender moments between mama and baby, with a little extra comfort, connection, and peace during feeding time.

Designing pieces that support mamas in real life is something I hold close to my heart — and this Stitched in Love Nursing Blanket has that intention stitched into every detail. Those early days with a new baby can feel tender, sweet, and a little overwhelming all at once, and I wanted to create something that brings comfort without adding fuss. The Stitched in Love Nursing Blanket is meant to be a steady, cozy companion — whether you’re settling in for a quiet feed at home, rocking in the nursery in the middle of the night, or soaking in those slow moments that go by way too fast.

✨ Inspiration Behind the Design

The Stitched in Love Nursing Blanket was born in one of those seasons that just makes your heart feel extra full — equal parts excitement, love, and a whole lot of anticipation. While I worked on this design, I was counting down the days until my new grandbaby made their grand entrance (and wouldn’t you know it — they arrived on December 31!). I stitched this one with coffee close by and love in every single row.

I set out to create a nursing blanket that felt like a cozy little hug — soft, breathable, and practical… but still pretty enough to feel special. One of my favorite parts of this whole design is the peekaboo opening, because it lets mama stay connected and keep eye contact with her sweet baby while nursing. Those quiet moments are pure magic, y’all.

From the textured stitches to the way it wraps and drapes, every detail was made with intention — to help make feeding time feel a little more comfortable, a little more peaceful, and a whole lot more connected.

If you love the cozy, comforting feel of the Stitched in Love Nursing Blanket, here are a few more patterns you might enjoy next. These are perfect for slow stitching, thoughtful gifts, and staying wrapped up in comfort — whether you’re making something sweet for baby or something cozy for mama.

✨ Design Details

The Stitched in Love Nursing Blanket was designed to be both practical and beautiful — something a mama can truly use, while still feeling soft, cozy, and special. The blanket is worked flat in rows using the Lemon Peel Stitch, which creates a gentle, textured fabric with a lovely drape (and it looks just as pretty in solid colors as it does in soft neutrals).

One of my favorite features is the peekaboo opening. It’s such a simple detail, but it makes a big difference — mama can stay connected and keep eye contact with her sweet baby while nursing, without having to constantly adjust coverage. The top edge is finished with a structured boning casing to help the opening hold its shape and stay in place while worn.

To keep everything secure and comfortable, this pattern includes two straps: a short adjustable strap with D-rings, and a longer strap for a snug, cozy fit. The straps are stitched in the Thermal Stitch, which gives them a thick, sturdy feel that holds up beautifully and feels extra comfy around the neck.

Finished Size

Approximately 30″ x 34″ (easy to adjust if you’d like a different width or length).

Skill Level

Intermediate (blanket body is beginner-friendly; boning and strap assembly add complexity)

🧶 Yarn + Fabric Feel

For my original sample, I used Baby Bee Sweet Delight in the color Flannel. It gave the blanket a soft, cozy feel with a beautiful drape — perfect for comfortable coverage while nursing.

You can also stitch this blanket with Brava Baby DK — it’s been a beautiful match for this design and makes a soft, comfy fabric with great drape. If you’d like to use the same yarn I’m using for my second sample, you can find it here: Brava Baby DK yarn (affiliate link — no extra cost to you, and it helps support my small business).

No matter which yarn you choose, I recommend sticking with a sport or DK-weight yarn that feels soft against sensitive skin and creates a fabric with good drape and breathability.

Yarn yardage

Approximately 1,500 yards

Tools I Used

Here are a few of the tools I used while making the Stitched in Love Nursing Blanket. You may already have everything you need, but I’ve linked a few of my favorites below in case they’re helpful.

Stitched in Love Nursing Blanket Crochet Pattern (With Peekaboo Opening)

What you will need for the Stitched in Love Nursing Blanket

  1. Sport or DK weight yarn (approx. 1,500 yards): Sample 1: Baby Bee Sweet Delight in Flannel, Sample 2: Brava Baby DK (affiliate option)
  2. 5.00 mm crochet hook (blanket body)
  3. 3.75 mm crochet hook (boning casing + straps)
  4. Yarn needle
  5. Scissors
  6. Stitch markers (helpful)
  7. 2 D-rings (for adjustable strap)
  8. Boning (to structure the peekaboo opening)
  9. (Optional but helpful) sewing needle + thread (for a tidy finish)

Pattern Notes

* Skill level: Intermediate. Part 1 is blanket body + border. Tutorial photos for the boning + strap assembly will be included in Part 2 / the premium PDF.

** Written in US crochet terms.

* Finished size: approx. 30″ x 34″

** Gauge: Not critical for this blanket, but changes in tension will affect the finished size and yardage.

* The chain stitch at the beginning of each row does not count as a stitch.

** The blanket body is worked flat in rows using Lemon Peel Stitch for soft texture and drape.

* The straps are worked using Thermal Stitch for a thick, sturdy, cozy feel (included in Part 2).

** The peekaboo opening is stabilized with a boning casing to help it hold its shape (included in Part 2).

Customizing Size

* To adjust the width of the blanket, work the starting chain in an even number of stitches until the desired width is reached.

** To adjust the length, simply work more rows for a longer blanket or fewer rows for a shorter one, until it reaches your preferred size.

Hardware + Boning Notes

* Boning: The boning used in this design is cotton-covered polyester boning, ¼”–½” wide. The exact product used for the sample can be found via my Amazon affiliate link. Cotton Covered Poly Polyester Boning 1/4″ – 1/2″

** Boning Preparation: The boning used in this design comes enclosed in a cotton casing. Before inserting the boning into the crochet casing, trim the boning slightly shorter than the cotton casing. Using a needle and thread, tack each end of the cotton casing closed to prevent the boning from shifting or working its way out during use. This extra step helps prevent sharp edges and ensures the boning remains safely enclosed.

* D-rings: I used 2″ D-rings for the adjustable strap. You can find them here: 30 Pack 2″ D Rings (Amazon affiliate link)

Stitch Key

ch = chain

dc = double crochet

FSC = Foundation Single Crochet

rep = repeat

sc = single crochet

slst = slip stitch

sk = skip

st = stitch

Lemon Peel Stitch (alternating sc and dc across the row)

BLO = back loop only

FLO = front loop only

TS = Thermal Stitch (used for straps)

Using 5.00 mm hook, begin the blanket body and work in Lemon Peel Stitch until the blanket reaches the intended length (adjustable).

Tip: If you want to customize the size, this design is easy to adjust by adding/removing rows (length) and adjusting your starting width.

Row 1:

120 FSC

Rows 2 – 123 (or until desired length)

Lemon Peel Stitch – sc, dc; repeat across, ch 1, turn.

Flat lay of the Stitched in Love crochet nursing blanket in progress in Baby Bee Sweet Delight Flannel yarn.

Rnd 1:

With the larger 5.00 mm hook, sc evenly around the blanket as follows:

  • sc in each stitch across.
  • work 3 sc in the corner.
  • sc evenly along the row ends down the side.
  • work 3 sc in the corner.
  • sc in each stitch across.
  • work 3 sc in the corner.
  • sc evenly along the row ends up the remaining side.
  • work 2 sc in the same stitch as the beginning sc.
  • join with a slst to the first sc.

Fasten off. Weave in ends.

With the 3.75 mm hook and right side facing, join yarn in the 31st stitch from the right edge along the top edge of the blanket (Row 123).

Row 1:

Sc in next 60 sts (leaving the remaining stitches on the row unworked), ch 1, turn.

Row 2:

Working in the FLO, sc across, ch 1, turn.

Rows 3 – 8:

Sc in each st across, ch 1, turn.

Do not finish off.

Place the boning in the casing, positioning it evenly.

Fold the casing so Row 8 meets Row 2. Working through both layers and over the boning, sc across, inserting the hook through stitches of Row 8 and the unworked back loops of Row 2 to enclose the boning.

Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Fold each short end of the boning casing inward to fully enclose the end.

Using a yarn needle and matching yarn, stitch the folded edge closed through all layers to prevent the boning from shifting.

Use small whip stitches or running stitches, stitching across the end several times to ensure it is secure.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

With 3.75 mm hook, ch 12.

Row 1:

Work the Thermal Stitch (TS) across, ch 1, turn.

Repeat TS rows until:

  • Strap 1: 8″ long (short strap)
  • Strap 2: 24″ long (long strap)

Do not fasten off the 8″ strap.

Fasten off the 24″ strap and set aside.

Slide two D-rings onto the 8″ strap and push them all the way down to the working end of the strap, where the crochet hook is.

Fold the working end of the strap over the D-rings, making sure there’s no slack.

Working along the last row worked, slst through both layers of the strap, inserting the hook through the sts of the last row and the strap body beneath to secure the D-rings in place.

Fasten off. Weave in ends.

With the right side of the blanket facing you, orient the blanket so the boning casing is along the top edge (nearest you).

Position the straps along the top edge of the blanket (Row 123) directly beside the boning casing:

  • Place the short strap (with D-rings) immediately beside the right-hand side of the boning casing.
  • Place the long strap immediately beside the left-hand side of the boning casing.

Align the end of each strap with the top edge so the straps sit flat and straight.

Turn the blanket so the wrong side is facing you.

Thread a yarn needle with matching yarn. Using a whip stitch (or mattress stitch for a less visible seam), stitch the strap securely to the top edge of the blanket by sewing back and forth several times across the width of the strap.

For added strength, catch a few stitches from the short end of the boning casing into the seam where it meets the side of the strap.

Stitch at least 2–3 passes across the strap attachment to ensure a strong hold.

This attachment point is a high-stress area; stitching several passes is recommended for durability.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Repeat for the remaining strap.

Whip Stitch: Bring the needle over the edge and through both layers, repeating evenly across to join the pieces.
