Just Cluck It Beanie, crochet chicken beanie work in progress

Undeniably, the Just Cluck It Beanie is the versatile answer to your wardrobe needs. This simple yet classic design is not only cozy and fashionable, but it also offers the perfect opportunity to practice your crochet skills with the Waistcoat stitch.

This beanie, made by using the Waistcoat stitch and working in the round will add a pop of personality to your cold weather ensemble. For the chicken portion I used a combination of intarsia and tapestry crochet so that the different colors didn’t show through the front of the hat. And, with only 42 rounds to complete and requiring just 220 yards of yarn, this project is a refreshing and enjoyable make.

Also, by using #3, lightweight yarn, this hat can be worn almost all year, making it a must-have for your fall, winter and spring wardrobes. But, what sets this beanie apart from the rest is its unique color work inspired by my beloved backyard chickens.

So, if you’re ready to learn how to make your own Just Cluck It Beanie for free, keep scrolling to use the pattern below, or upgrade to the premium version for a small fee and gain access to photo tutorials and a beautifully formatted written pattern. Just Cluck It Beanie Crochet Pattern

What you will need for the Just Cluck It Beanie crochet pattern

  1. Main portion & chicken designed with Snuggly Wuggly by Loops & Threads, lightweight (#3) yarn: Cream (Color A), Gray (Color B); Beak & Feet = stash yarn: Red (Color C) & Orange (Color D)
  2. 220 yds: Color A: 204 yds, Color B: 11 yds, Color C: 2 yds, Color D: 3 yds
  3. 4.00mm (G) hook
  4. Yarn Needle
  5. Scissors

Pattern Notes

* Intermediate pattern.

** Written in US crochet terms.

* Finished size = When laid flat, 9.5″ across at the widest point x 8.5″ tall.

** Gauge: Ribbing – 5 slst x 13 Rows = 2″; Body – 8 sc x 11 Rnds = 2″.

* Chain st at the beginning of row/rnd does not count as a stitch.

** It’s important to work the Wc loosely and tip your hook up so that the 2nd loop is slightly higher than the 1st loop on hook. The Wc st tends to tighten up which will make crocheting into the previous rnd difficult.

* Previous experience with color work is helpful for this pattern but definitely not required. I used a combination of tapestry and intarsia crochet. Also, be sure to leave some slack in the carried yarn.

** Ribbing is worked in rows, body is worked in the rnd.

* Right side is always facing you and all tails should be on the wrong side (inside of hat) of your work.

Stitch Key

BLO = Back Loop Only

ch = chain

join = Invisible Join Method (See photos below.)

rep = repeat

Rnd(s) = Round(s)

sc = single crochet

sk = skip

slst = slip stitch

st = stitch

Wc = Waistcoat st
