Can we discuss this cold weather that is upon us? If I’m begin honest, I am NOT looking forward to wintertime. Being a native Texan, it’s all about the warm weather and the sunny summer days. But, luckily we usually only have to tolerate the cold for a short period and then we’re back to warmer days. So, since it’s inevitable that there will be some brief cold weather coming this winter I have released my first beanie pattern of the season, the SASSy Swirls Bulky Beanie.

This is an extra cozy beanie that promises to keep you super warm. The chunky beanie pattern has amazing texture and works up quickly with the bulky yarn. It’s the perfect stylish beanie to add to your Winter accessories!!
Inspiration
The SASSy Swirls Bulky Beanie is another one of those patterns that has been patiently sitting in my WIP bucket for quite some time. I started it last year, actually got it written up, but, again, I didn’t have time to get it tested and released. I know, I know…I’m a bit slow at getting designs out, but I’m working on moving a little faster!!
So here we are a year later and I’m super excited that the SASSy Swirls Bulky Beanie is finally here for y’all to enjoy!!
This beautiful new crochet pattern is perfect to use when making hats for your markets or for gifting this Holiday season.
If bulky makes aren’t your thing stay tuned, I have 2 other versions coming. One in worsted weight and another in a DK weight for those of us that don’t wear heavy beanies very often.
Design Details
The SASSy Swirls Bulky Beanie is designed using #5 bulky weight velvet yarn, but they’re just as pretty when made with other bulky yarns too. The purple one shown here is made using #5 Premier Parfait.
This cozy beanie is an advanced beginner pattern that works up very quickly using a 6.5 mm (K) hook and you only need about 150 yards of bulky yarn. They’re made in one piece starting with the brim and are worked in the round from the bottom up using half double crochet and front post double crochet stitches. This is what gives the beanie the super cool swirly looking texture.
The SASSy Swirls Bulky Beanie is another relaxed fit type design. It’s not too tight or too slouchy but, easily customizable. Simply add rounds for a more slouchy fit or remove a round or two for a tighter fit.

SASSy Swirls Bulky Beanie Crochet Pattern Size S/M
What you will need for the SASSy Swirls Bulky Beanie crochet pattern
- #5 bulky yarn
- 150 yards
- 5.50 mm (I) hook for the brim; 6.50 mm (K) hook for the body
- Yarn Needle
- Scissors
Pattern Notes
- Advanced beginner pattern
- Written in US crochet terms
- Two size options are available: S/M & L. The L size is noted in parentheses.
- Finished size: S/M – 9″ wide x 9″ tall
- Gauge: 6 st x 4 Rnds = 2”
- The beanie is worked in the round from the bottom up.
- The ch stitch at the beginning of a round does not count as a stitch. Always place 1st stitchof each round in same sttich as beginning chain unless stated otherwise.
- Stitch count is only listed on each round when there is a change.

ch = chain
sc = single crochet
sc dec = single crochet decrease
FPDC = Front Post Double Crochet
rep = repeat
sp = space
Rnd(s) = Round(s)
slst = slip stitch
st = stitch
Instructions
Brim: With 5.50 mm (I) hook
Ch 6.
Row 1:
sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 1, turn. (5 sc)
Row 2:
sc BLO in each st across, ch 1, turn.
Rows 3 – 47:
rep Row 2.
Do not finish off. Bring ends together with Row 1 in front. Slst ends together working across beginning ch and in back loop of Row 47, ch 1, turn right side out, seam is now on the inside.
BODY: With (K) hook, DO NOT turn from this point forward.
Rnd 1:
work 50 sc around the top edge of the ribbing, slst to join to 1st sc, ch 1. 50 sc
Rnd 2:
*hdc in next 4, FPDC; rep from * around, slst to join to 1st hdc, ch 1.
Rnds 3 – 13:
rep Rnd 2.
Rnd 14:
sc in each st around, slst to join to 1st sc, ch 1.
Rnd 15:
*sc, sc dec; rep from * around, sc dec over last 2 sts, slst to join to 1st sc, ch 1. (33 sc)
Rnd 16:
*sc, sc dec; rep from * around, sc in last st, slst to join to 1st sc, ch 1. (22 sc)
Finish off leaving a 10” tail to cinch the top closed.
Turn the beanie inside out. Weave the tail in and out of the stitches on Rnd 16, cinch closed and secure. Turn right side out and add a pom if you would like!!
