Hi y’all! Did you know that August 26th is National Dog Day? To celebrate, I’m thrilled to share a tutorial on how to create the cutest hot pad – the Dog Paw Hot Pad – using just simple crochet stitches. Inspiration

The Dog Paw Hot Pad crochet pattern is a creation that has been in the making for a couple of years, and I am so thrilled to finally share it with all my fellow dog lovers. This adorable pattern not only serves a practical purpose in the kitchen, but also celebrates the love we have with our furry friends.

NOTE: This hot pad pattern is intended to protect countertops and tables. It is not meant to pick up hot pots/pans.

Design Details

I used I Love This Cotton yarn, one of my favorite yarns, to design this pattern. It’s a really soft, worsted weight yarn that works up great when working the Popcorn stitch. You only need a 4.00 mm hook and about 155 yards of yarn to make this paw-fect extra thick hot pad.

Using the single crochet stitch and Popcorn Stitch, you create two panels that are then connected with a unique thick border, resulting in a sturdy hot pad. Measuring 8.5″ x 8.5″, it’s the perfect size for most pans and a practical addition to any kitchen.

Due to the Popcorn stitch and color changes this is labeled as an intermediate level pattern. With some practice, I do feel like an advanced beginner could easily take on this project. It’s pretty easy to work up, but there are a few photos shown below that help when working the border just in case you get stuck.

When it comes to making an awesome hot pad, it’s important to remember that cotton yarn is really important. Acrylic yarn is not recommended for this project since hot items could potentially melt it causing more harm than good. So, if you want to keep your countertops safe, stick with cotton.

Yarn Info!

The hot pads shown throughout the article are made with 2 different colors of I Love This Cotton yarn: Brown and either Taupe, Cream or Serene Spa.

Several of these yarns can be found on Amazon and if you want to check them out over there just click the photos below. **As an Amazon Associate I may earn from qualifying purchases.

These hot pads are so easily customizable with the unlimited colors that are available in worsted weight cotton yarn. How amazing are these hot pads from my very talented testers, Stacy, Michele & Lauren! They all used different brands of worsted weight cotton yarn ranging from scrap yarn to We Crochet Dishie. They all worked up beautifully I think!

What you will need for the Dog Paw Hot Pad crochet pattern

  1. Worsted weight (#4) cotton yarn
  2. 155 yds: Color A (Front & back panels, Border) – 134 yds, Color B (Paw) – 21 yds
  3. 4.00 mm (G) hook
  4. Yarn needle
  5. Scissors

Pattern Notes

* Intermediate pattern.

** Written in US crochet terms.

* Finished size: 8.5″ wide x 8.5″ tall.

** Gauge: 7.5 sc x 8.25 rows = 2″.

* Chain stitch at the beginning of Rnd does not count as a stitch. Always place 1st stitch of each row in same stitch as beginning chain unless stated otherwise.

** When changing colors, I do not fasten off the Main Color. I drop the Main Color and join the next color. I clip the paw color after completing that row.

* I used a combination of tapestry & intarsia crochet techniques. Be sure to leave some slack in the carried yarn and always carry the yarn on the WS.

** To change colors do not complete sc. Leave 2 loops on hook, yarn over with new color and pull through 2 loops on hook.

* Each hot pad is made up of 2 pieces, a front and back that is connected with a border.

** Stitch count is only listed on each row when there is a change.

* Starting at the bottom right corner, odd numbered rows are read ⬅️ and are RS rows. Even numbered rows are read ➡️ and are WS rows.
