New CrissCross Chunky Scarf Pattern

Get ready for chilly weather with this cozy, bulky scarf! The CrissCross Chunky Scarf is one of our classic SASS designs—quick to make, stylish to wear, and wonderfully warm. It’s been a community favorite for years, and I’m excited to give it a fresh update while keeping everything you loved about the original.

This scarf may look intricate, but don’t let the texture fool you. The pattern uses simple stitches and a steady, easy-to-follow rhythm that makes it both approachable and satisfying to crochet. Designed with advanced beginners in mind, it’s a great project if you’re ready to build confidence while still enjoying a relaxing, no-stress make—perfect for cozy stitching sessions, Texas-style.

The CrissCross Chunky Scarf works up quickly thanks to its bulky yarn and straightforward construction. Most crocheters can expect to finish it in a couple of hours, making it a great choice for gifting or a satisfying weekend project. Whether you’re adding a handmade staple to your own winter wardrobe or stitching up something special for someone else, this scarf delivers timeless style with a fresh, modern feel.

Pattern Update:
This pattern was originally published several years ago and has been thoughtfully refreshed for clarity and ease of use. The stitch pattern, sizing, and overall design remain the same classic CrissCross Chunky Scarf you know and love.

What’s new is improved formatting, updated wording, and the addition of this free version of the pattern to make it even more accessible for today’s crocheters. Whether you’re returning to a favorite or discovering this scarf for the first time, you can jump in with confidence knowing the heart of the design hasn’t changed.

Design Inspiration

The CrissCross Chunky Scarf is the very first design in the CrissCross series and set the foundation for everything that followed. The original idea started as an exploration of texture—how a simple combination of basic stitches could be arranged to create a bold, woven look with plenty of visual interest.

This scarf was designed using bulky yarn to highlight that crisscross texture in a cozy, statement-making way while keeping the construction straightforward and approachable. Once the stitch pattern was established, it naturally lent itself to other accessories, eventually growing into the full CrissCross collection.

What began with this scarf has since expanded into a matching beanie, cowl, boot cuffs, and ear warmer—each one built around the same signature texture, reimagined to suit different pieces. The CrissCross Chunky Scarf remains the heart of the series and a favorite starting point for crocheters who love quick projects with timeless style.

If you love the texture on this scarf, you’ll love the rest of the CrissCross Chunky series too. Here are the matching patterns that use the same signature crisscross look:

Design Details

Beginner-friendly chunky scarf crochet pattern wrapped around mannequin neck

The CrissCross Chunky Scarf works up quickly thanks to its #5 bulky yarn and streamlined construction. The entire pattern is made up of just 11 rows, making it an approachable project that still delivers plenty of texture and visual interest.

While the scarf looks beautiful in a single color, using two colors really allows the design to shine. The bold stripe running through the center highlights the signature crisscross texture and adds an eye-catching detail without complicating the pattern.

Testers finished their scarves in no time and especially loved the twisted stitch that runs through the middle of the design—it’s a small detail that makes a big impact. The finished scarf measures a generous 90 inches long and was intentionally designed with extra length for cozy bundling. I’m 5’2″, and it’s the perfect size for wrapping multiple times or simply looping once, as shown in the photos.

Best of all, you’ll only need about 300 yards of yarn to make your own. The hardest part might just be deciding whether to keep things classic with a solid color or have a little fun with a bold, contrasting pair.

One of the best things about the CrissCross Chunky Scarf is how easy it is to customize to fit your style.

Adjust the length: Prefer a shorter scarf or want an extra-long statement piece? You can easily add or remove rows to create the perfect length for you.

Play with color: This pattern looks classic in a single solid shade, but experimenting with two contrasting colors really brings out the crisscross texture. Try soft neutrals for an everyday look or bold color pairings for a fun pop.

Change the fringe: Fringe is optional and easy to modify. Add longer fringe for extra drama, keep it short and simple, or skip it altogether for a clean, modern finish.

Make it your own: From subtle tonal yarns to high-contrast combinations, this scarf is the perfect canvas for showcasing your personal style.

Finish off & weave in ends

Add fringe: Cut 16” long strands of yarn to attach evenly across the ends. (I added about 6 strands on each end.) Fold 1 strand in half, hold the scarf facing you and insert hook from back to front and pull strand through. Insert both tails of the strand through the loop, pull tightly to secure. Trim to desired length. Unraveling the fringe is fun too! Just “comb” a needle through the strands then trim to desired length.
