SASSy Spotlight April '21

The April ’21 SASSy Spotlight…

Hellooooo April!! I love the month of April for so many reasons. Most importantly, we kick it off with my son, Chase’s birthday that is on the 1st. And then, as the month goes on the temps only get warmer here in Texas which I absolutely love.

Whitney of Pine Tree Crochet

I’m especially excited about this April though, because I get to share one of my favorite crochet designers with you. We’re turning the SASSy Spotlight on Whitney of Pine Tree Crochet this month and I couldn’t be more excited!!

Whitney and I first connected on Instagram and I immediately recognized her genuine kindness. Her sweet personality really shines through and she always shares that kindness with everyone. Like so many of my favorites in the crochet world she completely represents Community Over Competition.

Whitney’s Business Name

Whitney’s business name, Pine Tree Crochet, really interested me as I love pine trees so much. They remind me of my time with my Nana when I was little. We often took road trips to Louisiana and on the way there we always saw tons of pine trees.

Naturally, I was super curious about this awesome business name since pine trees always bring back special memories. When I asked about it Whitney shared how it came about. “I was visiting a friend’s place in the country and was walking under these gorgeous tall pine trees. I took a photo, so I could remember how peaceful it was and how lovely it looked. It wasn’t until a while later when looking back on that memory I decided to combine my love for crochet under the peaceful pine trees, Pine Tree Crochet.”

I love this as I too see the pine trees as very peaceful!

Pine Tree Crochet Started In…

Pine Tree Crochet is a fairly new business. Whitney started it almost 2 years ago, in the summer of 2019.

“Things have definitely changed since then, but my love for crochet has stayed the same!”

Although her business is newer she started knitting about 10 years ago and has been crocheting for about 6 years.

How Many Patterns Have You Released So Far?

Even though Pine Tree Crochet is a newer business Whitney is knocking it out with her pattern releases. She has already released 27 designs. That’s so amazing!! You can find all of those patterns on the Pine Tree Crochet blog and in her Ravelry Shop.

“I started my crochet journey making for others. I am happy to be designing my own patterns and helping support other designers by testing their patterns and gifting them to others!”

All of Whitney’s designs are fabulous and I’m proud to say that I have even tested for her. She likes to focus on beginner to advanced beginner patterns with easy one or two row repeats.

I don’t know about y’all but I’m a huge fan of patterns with one or two row repeats!!

Favorite Design That You’ve Created So Far?

With 27 patterns to choose from I don’t know how Whitney could possibly decide on a favorite one but she did!

“My favorite pattern I designed is Little Lady. Whether you call them ladybirds or ladybugs, Little Lady is my second amigurumi pattern and I love how she came out! I was looking through some nature photos from last summer one day and decided I wanted to crochet a little lady. It didn’t go quite as smoothly as planned, but I tweaked a few things more than once and Little Lady has taken flight!”

This is one of my favs too!! I actually tested this cutie for Whitney and absolutely love how easy it is and how quickly it works up. If you’re looking for an easy, quick make for Spring be sure to hop over and check out this adorable pattern.

What Are Your Favorite Things To Design?

Many of Whitney’s patterns are warm and cozy accessories. This is mostly due to her living in Southern Ontario and she has to keep warm from the cold Canadian winters.

Some of her patterns include the beautiful Autumn Crunch cowl, beanie and fingerless gloves that we’ve shown here. I am in love with all 3 of these patterns and they are definitely on my to do list for this fall.

You can check out these awesome Autumn Crunch patterns here:

Whitney’s most popular design is the fun Rainbow Sprinkles Handbag pattern and it takes no time at all to make one. This smaller sized handbag is a quick advanced beginner friendly pattern with an easy one row repeat using the Wattle Stitch.

Where Does Most Of Your Work Happen?

I checked in with Whitney to see where she gets most of her work done and like so many of us she answered, “the couch.” As crafty business owners that work from home, I think we all dream of having a designated space just for our supplies and/or inventory, but I must say that I now have that space and you can still usually find me on the couch when I’m working.

“While I wish I had one room devoted to yarn and crochet (where I could just close the door on the mess) my yarn and crochet seems to be everywhere. I also follow the natural light when taking pictures of my makes, which often changes based on the season and time of day.  My couch is the place I usually sit back and crochet!”

What’s Up When You’re Not Crocheting?

Y’all know me! I am always curious about what other crochet designers do when they’re not crocheting because it’s very rare that I’m not doing SOMETHING crochet related!!

When Whitney isn’t crocheting she is outside enjoying the fresh air or taking pictures of nature. Some of her favorite things to take photos of are bees, bugs, birds and flowers. She also likes to ice skate, rollerblade and go fishing.

April ’21 SASSy Spotlight Pattern?

Now that Whitney has shared all the things about her and Pine Tree Crochet, it’s time to reveal her special gift to us! As part of the April ’21 SASSy Spotlight we are featuring Pine Tree Crochet’s newest pattern, the Coastal Waves Coaster!!

This beautiful pattern works up very quickly and is a great stash buster. Whitney initially designed a coaster with this pattern, but she also recommends making it into a dishcloth by simply adding a few more rows and by using a cotton yarn. This coaster pattern is easily customizable to match any decor too. Just change up the colors to coordinate with your style!

This fabulous coaster pattern was inspired by Whitney’s leftover yarn. Like all crocheters we have a stash of leftover yarn, not enough for a large project, but too much to toss out! This fun new coaster is definitely on my to do list so that I can use up some of my stash!

“I have a bin of left over yarn from other projects, and I am always looking for designs that are interesting and can help me empty that bin! I like how this pattern creates a wave using a combination of stitches, which inspired the name Coastal Waves Coaster. With this new design I was also able to use up a bit of my stash.”

If you’re loving this brand new coaster pattern as much as I am you can enjoy 50% off the PDF in the Pine Tree Crochet Ravelry store through April 9, 2021. Just use coupon code coaster50 at checkout for this awesome discount!!

What’s Coming Next For Pine Tree Crochet?

When I asked Whitney what was next for Pine Tree Crochet she said, “I have a few things on the go, maybe a few too many WIP’s, but stay tuned as I am always playing with new designs and creating new patterns!

Oh, I’ll stay tuned!! You cannot possibly have too many WIP’s, right? I can’t wait to see what’s coming next from Pine Tree Crochet.
